LOCATION and PLACES OF INTEREST
A couple of minutes away, the nearest village of St. Vivien has a thriving community with a busy calendar of social activities.
VILLEREAL, with its "One of the most Beautiful Villages in France' award, is situated in the northern part of Lot et Garonne near the border with the Dordogne and is the nearest town. It has a rare Medieval Market Hall that dominates the central square where a market is held every Saturday. It is a lively small town with many back streets to explore. You will find activity whatever time of year you visit. Villereal was founded by Alphonse de Poitiers in 1269, in an effort to keep the English at bay. It did not work and the English occupied the town during the 100 Years War. There are numerous Restaurants, 2 Supermarkets and all necessary amenities there.
MONFLANQUIN (10 km away) sits high on quite a steep hill with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. It was founded in 1256 by Alphonse de Poitiers. It has arcades around a central square and is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Here you will find many Restaurants, an outdoor swimming pool and a couple of museums.
MONPAZIER is also listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Its preserved Medieval Village is almost intact. Founded by Edward 1 in 1284, it had an unpleasant 14th century when it was kicked backwards and forwards in the 100 Years War. It has a beautiful fortified church. There are no cars in the center, only Arcades and the Market Hall. The 2 highlights of the calendar in Monpazier are the Spring Flower Festival and the Summer Bodega.
CHATEAU de BIRON, the largest of Perigord's castles was built in the 11th century and is steeped in history. There are also castle ruins at GAVAUDUN resting on a huge natural stone platform. The ruins are dominated by a striking, stinky six-storey dungeon. The ruins of the 13th century Castle at BONAGUIL are tucked into the wooded hills at the east end of Lot et Garonne and it is one of the finest castles in the southwest. There is a festival of theatre in the summer when the castle is illuminated until midnight. It is quite a stunning sight.
VILLENEUVE_SUR_LOT is just 30 mins away and has a brand new hospital. There are many shops and Restaurants. The same facilities may be found 1hr away at AGEN and 2 hrs away at BORDEAUX and TOULOUSE. Within a short drive is a swimming lake, golf course, the Dordogne, Garonne and Lot rivers. Beaches are 2h 30min at ARCACHON and LACANOU. There is also golf, fishing, horse riding, canoeing and many more activities within easy reach.
The high town of PUJOLS is one of the attractions around Villeneuve. It was once a Celtic oppidum and Roman town named Podium or 'High Place'. 10 kilometres south of Pujols towards AGEN are the GROTTES DE FONTIROU with unusual limestone formations that are well worth a visit.
